Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Sunday that Aspen Island in Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin will be renamed as part of national and community festivities in June 2022 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the British monarchy.
“We are happy to join with other Commonwealth nations to mark this milestone… Aspen Island, the home of the National Carillon in Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin, will be renamed Queen Elizabeth II Island during a special ceremony in June 2022,” Morrison said in a statement on his website.
Celebrations will include the unveiling of the new Queen Elizabeth Water Gardens in Melbourne, the lighting of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacon in Canberra, the issuance of commemorative stamps and coins, and the illumination of landmarks across Australia, according to Morrison.
Elizabeth II will have reigned for 70 years in six weeks, on February 6, 2022. The Queen added in her Christmas message that she was looking forward to becoming the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee in 2022, which will mark her 70 years on the throne.
