The Australian government is working with United Nation’s Population Fund (UNFPA) to reduce maternal mortality, advance sexual and reproductive health and rights, and prevent gender-based violence, in the country.
In a tweet, Australian Ambassador and the permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Mitch Fifield, said, “Australia’s partnership with UNFPA is going from strength to strength with a new four-year agreement committing critical core resources from Australia to UNFPA”.
He added, “Empowering women, girls and youth worldwide and in the Indo-Pacific is key to our partnership. Together, Australia and UNFPA will work to reduce maternal mortality, advance sexual and reproductive health and rights, and prevent gender-based violence”.
The United Nations agency for sexual and reproductive health is known as UNFPA. It aims to deliver a world where every pregnancy is desired, every birth is safe, and every young person’s potential is realized.
More than 150 countries, home to more than 80% of the world’s population, are supported by UNFPA in providing reproductive health care for women and young people. It also supports pregnant women’s health, particularly the 1 million who experience life-threatening complications each month and reliable access to enough modern birth control to help 20 million women a year.
The number and percentage of women dying from pregnancy or childbirth complications have decreased by 50% since UNFPA began its work. Families are more wholesome. More than ever, young people are empowered and connected.
But far too many continue to be abandoned. A staggering 760 million people live in abject poverty. In the developing world, issues with sexual and reproductive health are a leading cause of fatalities and disabilities among women. The risk of HIV infection and unintended pregnancy is highest in young people. Countless millions of girls must consider the possibility of child marriage and other harmful customs like female genital mutilation (FGM)
