Beijing’s annual independent queer film festival has been cancelled just a day before its scheduled opening, following alleged sustained pressure and harassment from Chinese authorities, raising fresh concerns over growing restrictions on LGBTQ+ communities and independent filmmakers in the country.
The Beijing Queer Film Festival, also known as Love Queer Film Week, was scheduled to begin on Friday, October 30, in the Chinese capital. The event is among the oldest independent film festivals in mainland China and has provided a rare platform for films and discussions centred on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) issues.
Announcing the cancellation through its official Instagram account late on Thursday, the organisers expressed regret over the decision and apologised to filmmakers, participants and audiences who had planned to attend the event. However, the statement did not specify the reasons behind the cancellation or indicate whether the festival would be rescheduled.
According to reports, police had reportedly intensified pressure on the organisers through repeated telephone calls in the weeks leading up to the event. The alleged intervention came despite preparations being underway, with several international filmmakers whose works had been selected for screening having already travelled to China to participate.
Established in 2001 by a group of students from Peking University, the festival gradually developed into an important space for independent filmmakers and members of the LGBTQ+ community to showcase their work and discuss issues surrounding gender identity, sexuality and social acceptance. It became the only film festival in mainland China offering a public platform specifically dedicated to LGBTQ+ films and related discussions.
The cancellation comes amid growing scrutiny of independent cultural platforms and organisations associated with feminist and LGBTQ+ causes in China. Experts believe that film festivals and similar events are particularly vulnerable because they provide opportunities for alternative social narratives and discussions that may fall outside the ideological framework supported by the ruling Communist Party.
Maya Wang, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said the Chinese government under President Xi Jinping had continued to tighten social and ideological controls. Activities not officially sanctioned by the state were increasingly facing scrutiny and alleged harassment, she said, adding that civil society organisations, LGBTQ+ communities and independent filmmakers were all experiencing mounting pressure.
Hongwei Bao, a professor of Chinese studies at the University of St Andrews who specialises in LGBTQ+ issues, described the festival as an important symbol of resilience for the queer community in China. He warned that its closure could discourage people from expressing themselves and participating in independent cultural activities, creating a chilling effect across the community.
The latest development is not an isolated incident. In June this year, screenings of films featuring LGBTQ+ themes, which were scheduled during Pride Month at the Institut Français, a French cultural centre in Beijing, were also cancelled following reported police harassment.
China’s independent film sector has faced similar restrictions in the past. The Beijing Independent Film Festival, one of the country’s most prominent independent film events, was shut down in 2014 after authorities detained its founders and cut off the electricity supply to the venue. Last year, an independent Chinese film festival scheduled to take place in New York was also cancelled following reported harassment by Chinese authorities, raising concerns about pressure extending beyond the country’s borders.
Despite the increasingly difficult environment, the Beijing Queer Film Festival continued to attract considerable interest from filmmakers and volunteers. The organisers received around 200 volunteer applications last year, four times the number recorded in 2024, reflecting growing enthusiasm for the platform.
The cancellation has once again highlighted the challenges faced by independent cultural initiatives and LGBTQ+ communities in China, where opportunities for public discussion and representation have reportedly continued to narrow. Beijing’s public security bureau was not available for comment on the reported allegations of police pressure.
