On May 18, 2025, British mountaineer guide Kenton Cool achieved a historic milestone by summiting Mount Everest for the 19th time, setting a new record for the most ascents by a non-Sherpa mountaineer. The 51-year-old from southwest England reached the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) peak alongside fellow climbers, marking another significant achievement in his illustrious mountaineering career.
Cool’s journey with Everest began in 2004, and he has since made nearly annual ascents, missing only in 2014, 2015, and 2020 due to an avalanche, an earthquake, and the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively. His latest ascent underscores his enduring dedication and exceptional capability in high-altitude climbing.
Upon returning to Kathmandu by helicopter, Cool expressed his intention to climb Everest again in 2026, aiming for a 20th or possibly 21st summit before shifting focus to other Nepalese peaks. He noted the increasing number of climbers attempting the summit simultaneously but believes participation should remain open, urging climbers to be responsible and adequately prepared.
While Cool leads among non-Sherpas, Nepali Sherpa guide Kami Rita holds the overall record with 30 ascents and is preparing for yet another climb this season. The spring climbing season remains busy, with hundreds currently aiming to reach the summit before monsoon conditions begin.
Cool’s achievement not only highlights his personal endurance and dedication but also cements his influential role within the mountaineering community, inspiring fellow climbers and contributing to Everest expedition history.
As Nepal continues to be a hub for high-altitude mountaineering, with eight of the world’s 14 tallest peaks, the country’s economic reliance on mountaineering tourism remains significant. For the current climbing season, Nepal has issued 468 permits at $11,000 each, further underscoring the economic importance of mountaineering tourism for the country.
Cool’s record-setting ascent serves as a testament to human endurance and the spirit of exploration, inspiring climbers worldwide to pursue their mountaineering ambitions responsibly.
