British low-cost airline easyJet has reported a sharp decline in quarterly profits after a surge in fuel costs triggered by the ongoing conflict involving Iran significantly increased operating expenses and affected consumer travel behaviour. The airline said its pre-tax profit for the third quarter dropped by nearly 70%, underscoring the financial impact geopolitical tensions continue to have on the aviation industry.
For the three months ending in June, easyJet posted a pre-tax profit of £85 million, a steep fall from the £286 million recorded during the same period last year. Company officials attributed much of the decline to a £105 million jump in fuel expenses, driven by soaring global oil prices following the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East. The conflict has disrupted energy markets, sending aviation fuel prices sharply higher and increasing operational costs for airlines worldwide.
Apart from rising costs, the airline also noted a shift in customer booking patterns. Travellers have increasingly delayed purchasing tickets until closer to departure dates, reflecting uncertainty over economic conditions and travel costs. While demand for holidays has remained resilient, passengers are seeking competitive fares before committing to travel plans, creating challenges for airlines in forecasting revenues and managing capacity.
Despite the steep decline in profits, easyJet’s financial performance was better than several market analysts had expected. The airline maintained that bookings for the peak summer travel period remain encouraging, with consumers continuing to prioritise leisure travel despite higher ticket prices. Management expressed confidence that strong summer demand would support overall performance during the remainder of the financial year, although it acknowledged that uncertainties surrounding fuel prices and geopolitical developments continue to pose risks.
Chief Executive Kenton Jarvis said attractive pricing strategies have helped stimulate bookings even as travellers remain cautious. He observed that while many customers are still booking at the last minute, there are early signs that booking patterns could gradually normalise if consumer confidence continues to improve. However, he cautioned that the airline’s financial outlook remains closely tied to movements in fuel markets and broader global events.
The earnings announcement comes at a time when easyJet is also at the centre of a takeover battle. The airline has accepted a £5.7 billion acquisition proposal from US investment firm Apollo Global Management, surpassing an earlier £5.5 billion offer made by Castlelake. Under the UK’s takeover timetable, Castlelake has until August 3 to submit a firm offer, while Apollo faces an August 7 deadline to finalise its bid.
However, uncertainty surrounding potential changes to European Union airline ownership regulations could complicate the acquisition process. Reports suggest the EU is considering stricter rules requiring airlines operating within the bloc to maintain majority European ownership. If implemented, such regulations could present hurdles for foreign investors seeking control of European carriers. EasyJet said it has not received any formal communication from European authorities on the matter but is closely monitoring developments.
Investors reacted positively to the airline’s results despite the earnings decline, with easyJet shares recovering after recent losses linked to concerns over the Middle East conflict. Analysts said the competing takeover bids indicate that investors continue to see long-term value in the airline, even as short-term profitability remains under pressure from external factors.
EasyJet is not alone in facing these challenges. Rival budget carrier Ryanair has also reported weaker profits due to higher fuel bills resulting from the same geopolitical tensions. Across the aviation sector, airlines have been forced to absorb significantly higher fuel costs while balancing competitive fares and fluctuating passenger demand. Industry experts believe that unless energy prices stabilise and geopolitical tensions ease, airlines are likely to continue facing pressure on profit margins in the coming months.
