Thousands of students and young people took to the streets of New Delhi in a major show of defiance against the Centre, marching towards Parliament despite prohibitory orders, heavy security deployment and restrictions imposed by the police. The protest, led by the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), marked one of the largest demonstrations witnessed in the national capital in recent years over alleged irregularities in the country’s examination system and growing frustration over unemployment and lack of accountability.
The demonstrators demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accusing the government of failing to prevent repeated examination paper leaks that have affected millions of students aspiring for higher education and government jobs. Protesters alleged that the recurring scandals had shattered the dreams of countless young people and reflected deeper flaws in India’s education and recruitment systems. The movement, which initially emerged as an online satirical campaign under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party, has since transformed into a nationwide youth-led campaign calling for sweeping reforms and greater political accountability.
Authorities had denied permission for the Parliament march and imposed restrictions on public gatherings, fearing law and order issues. Several parts of central Delhi witnessed extensive barricading, deployment of police personnel and restrictions on movement. Reports also indicated disruptions to internet services in certain areas as security agencies attempted to prevent large crowds from assembling. Despite these measures, protesters gathered in significant numbers and marched through the capital, leading to confrontations with security personnel. Witnesses reported the use of batons and tear gas to disperse sections of the crowd as demonstrators attempted to move towards Parliament.
The protest gained further momentum after renowned engineer, education reformer and activist Sonam Wangchuk extended his support to the movement through a prolonged hunger strike. Wangchuk had been fasting since late June, demanding the resignation of the education minister and reforms to the examination system. His forcible removal by police from the protest site to a hospital over health concerns drew widespread attention and triggered fresh outrage among supporters, who viewed the action as an attempt to suppress peaceful dissent. Wangchuk, however, reiterated his commitment to the cause, describing the campaign as a broader struggle for justice and accountability.
The protesters maintained that the agitation extends beyond examination paper leaks and reflects growing dissatisfaction among the country’s youth over shrinking employment opportunities, alleged corruption and a perceived lack of transparency in governance. Several participants said students had invested years preparing for competitive examinations only to face repeated cancellations and uncertainty due to paper leak controversies. According to organisers, the movement has also been fuelled by concerns over the emotional toll these incidents have taken on students and their families.
Support for the movement has spread beyond Delhi, with solidarity demonstrations reported from several cities across the country. Student groups, professionals and civil society members joined the campaign, while volunteers arranged food, water and medical assistance for those participating in the sit-in protests. Organisers said the growing public support reflected widespread concern over the future of India’s youth and the need for systemic reforms rather than temporary measures.
Although representatives of the movement were reportedly offered discussions with government officials, protesters said no concrete assurances were given on their principal demands. They insisted that the agitation would continue until meaningful action was taken, including fixing accountability for repeated examination failures and introducing comprehensive reforms to restore confidence in the education system. The developments have placed increasing political pressure on the government, with the issue emerging as one of the most significant youth-led movements witnessed in recent years.
