A fresh Ebola outbreak in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has triggered serious concern among health officials after dozens of deaths were reported and fears mounted over the possibility of the virus spreading across borders in Central and East Africa. Authorities and international agencies have intensified emergency response efforts as cases continue to rise in the conflict-hit Ituri province, a region already struggling with insecurity and weak healthcare infrastructure.
Health authorities initially reported at least 65 deaths linked to the Ebola outbreak, with around 246 suspected cases emerging from affected areas. However, updated figures released over the weekend indicated that the situation may be worsening, with some agencies estimating the death toll has climbed above 80 and suspected infections crossing 300. The rapidly evolving numbers have heightened fears that the true scale of the outbreak may be larger than currently documented.
The outbreak is centered in Ituri province, particularly in the health zones of Mongwalu and Rwampara. Suspected infections have also been reported in Bunia, the provincial capital. Health experts have warned that the region’s unique challenges — including ongoing armed conflict, difficult terrain and significant movement of people — could complicate efforts to contain transmission.
Laboratory investigations identified the virus strain responsible as the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola, a less common strain that presents additional concerns because no licensed vaccine currently exists specifically for it. Existing Ebola vaccines have primarily targeted the more common Zaire strain. Public health experts say this limitation could make containment efforts significantly more challenging.
According to health agencies, initial testing found a significant proportion of samples positive for the virus, confirming active transmission. Investigators believe the outbreak may have begun with a healthcare worker in Bunia, though tracing efforts remain underway to establish the chain of transmission. The outbreak’s spread into densely populated and highly mobile areas has raised concern among officials. Mining zones in particular are being closely monitored due to frequent movement of workers and communities.
The crisis has also crossed national boundaries. Uganda confirmed imported Ebola cases linked to travelers arriving from Congo, including at least one death in Kampala. The cross-border movement has prompted neighboring countries and regional agencies to step up surveillance and preparedness measures.
In response, the World Health Organization and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention launched coordinated emergency measures involving contact tracing, regional monitoring and deployment of medical teams. Authorities from DRC, Uganda and neighboring countries have also begun discussions on strengthening border screening and rapid response strategies.
The outbreak has revived memories of earlier Ebola crises, particularly the devastating West African epidemic of 2014–16 that claimed thousands of lives. Congo itself has experienced repeated encounters with the disease and this latest incident marks one of the country’s numerous outbreaks since Ebola was first identified there in 1976. Health experts stress that early detection, rapid isolation and coordinated international action will be critical in preventing another wider health emergency.
The situation escalated further on Sunday when the WHO declared the Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern, underscoring growing fears over the disease’s spread and severity.
