US-based low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines has raised ticket prices sharply amid a steep increase in aviation fuel costs, with the airline reporting a 71% rise in average ticket revenue per passenger during the third quarter of 2026. Despite higher fares and an increase in passenger numbers, the airline’s financial losses widened as surging fuel expenses continued to put pressure on its operations.
Frontier Airlines, one of the major budget carriers in the United States, earned an average of $67.82 per passenger through ticket sales during the July-September quarter, compared with $39.74 in the corresponding period last year. The figures indicate a significant increase in the airline’s earnings from ticket sales, excluding additional charges collected for services such as baggage and other passenger requirements.
The airline’s overall revenue per passenger, which includes both ticket prices and additional service fees, also recorded a substantial increase. It rose 30% year-on-year to $138.22 during the quarter. The additional revenue includes charges for checked-in baggage, carry-on luggage and other optional services offered to passengers.
However, the increase in ticket prices and passenger revenue was not sufficient to offset the sharp rise in operational expenses, particularly the cost of aviation fuel. Frontier’s fuel expenditure surged 82% year-on-year to $425 million during the third quarter, making it one of the biggest factors affecting the airline’s financial performance.
The rising cost of jet fuel has emerged as a major challenge for airlines, as fuel constitutes a significant portion of their operating expenses, alongside employee salaries and other costs. With fuel prices climbing, carriers have been compelled to increase fares to protect their revenues and manage the growing financial burden.
Frontier reported a net loss of $104 million for the third quarter, compared with a loss of $77 million during the same period in 2025. The widening deficit highlights how escalating fuel expenses can outweigh the benefits of higher ticket prices and increased passenger traffic.
Despite the price hikes, the airline continued to witness growth in passenger numbers, indicating that demand for air travel remained resilient. Frontier transported more than 9.8 million passengers during the quarter, marking an 18% increase over the corresponding period last year. This represented approximately 1.5 million additional passengers compared with the previous year.
The airline’s performance also reflects a broader trend in the US aviation sector, where carriers have been raising ticket prices in response to higher fuel expenses. According to a CNBC report, airlines such as Delta Air Lines and Frontier have indicated that customers are continuing to book flights despite the higher fares.
Looking ahead, Frontier has expressed the possibility of returning to adjusted profitability in the fourth quarter, depending on its revenue performance and ability to manage expenses. Its earnings guidance projects an adjusted loss of 15 cents per share at the lower end of the forecast, while the more optimistic estimate indicates adjusted earnings of up to five cents per share.
The airline’s shares gained more than 9% during afternoon trading on Wednesday, October 28, as investors assessed its quarterly performance and the outlook for the final three months of the year.
Frontier has also strengthened its position in the American budget aviation market following the closure of Spirit Airlines in May. The company had overtaken Spirit to become the largest low-cost airline in the US before its rival ceased operations. The development has altered the competitive landscape for budget carriers, creating opportunities for Frontier to attract more travellers.
Nevertheless, the latest financial results underline the challenges facing the airline industry. While higher fares and growing passenger numbers have helped Frontier improve revenue generation, the continuing rise in fuel prices remains a significant obstacle to restoring profitability.
