According to internal documents reviewed by media, non-compliant employees are being offered voluntary exit packages or relocation assistance to facilitate their return to office settings. Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini clarified that these return-to-office requirements are determined at the team level, not through a companywide mandate. She emphasized the company’s belief that “in-person collaboration is an important part of how we innovate and solve complex problems.”
The move aligns with Google’s broader cost-cutting strategy and strategic pivot toward AI and infrastructure development. Following significant layoffs in early 2023, the company has continued targeted reductions across several units.
