In a striking display of technological progress, dozens of humanoid robots raced alongside human participants at a half-marathon in Beijing on Sunday, highlighting how far robotics has advanced in just a year. The event, which featured more than 100 robots developed by Chinese companies, underscored significant improvements in speed, endurance, and autonomy, drawing global attention to China’s growing capabilities in artificial intelligence and robotics.
The race marked a dramatic turnaround from its inaugural edition last year, when many robots struggled to even begin the course, frequently fell, and required extensive human intervention. This time, however, the machines demonstrated far greater stability and coordination, with several completing the 21-kilometre route smoothly and at impressive speeds.
One of the standout performers among the robots completed the race in 2 hours and 40 minutes, emerging as the fastest machine competitor. While this time still lagged behind the human winner in the traditional race, the improvement compared to the previous year was notable. In 2025, only a handful of robots managed to finish the course at all, highlighting the pace of innovation achieved within a short span.
The number of participating robots also saw a sharp increase, rising from about 20 in the previous edition to more than 100 this year. Organisers ensured safety by having robots run on parallel tracks separate from human runners, preventing collisions while allowing both groups to compete simultaneously.
The competition also showcased advances in autonomy, with several robots operating with minimal or no human control. Unlike earlier versions that depended heavily on remote guidance, many of this year’s machines were capable of navigating the course independently, adapting to terrain and maintaining balance without constant intervention. This shift represents a key milestone in robotics, where machines are increasingly able to perform complex physical tasks in real-world environments.
Beyond the spectacle of robots racing humans, the event served as a demonstration of China’s broader ambitions in the robotics sector. The country has been investing heavily in developing humanoid machines capable of performing a range of functions, from industrial work to hazardous tasks. Events like the Beijing half-marathon are being used as public showcases to highlight these advancements and inspire further innovation.
Experts, however, caution that despite the impressive performance, humanoid robots are still far from being widely practical for everyday use. Challenges remain in areas such as software sophistication, adaptability, and cost-effectiveness. While the machines are becoming more capable in controlled environments like races, translating these abilities into real-world applications will require further development.
Nevertheless, the Beijing race has emerged as a symbol of how quickly robotics technology is evolving. What was once seen as experimental and unreliable is now edging closer to functional reality, with humanoid robots demonstrating not just the ability to walk, but to compete in endurance events alongside humans.
