The trend marks a continuation of a steady decline that has persisted for nearly two decades. While earlier global debates once warned of overpopulation, experts now argue that the opposite problem—fewer births—is emerging as a more pressing concern. The falling birth rate has not yet led to an outright population decline in the US, but it is accelerating the ageing of society, with a growing proportion of elderly citizens compared to the working-age population.
This demographic shift is expected to place increasing pressure on public finances. As the number of retirees rises, a smaller workforce will be responsible for funding key programmes such as Social Security and Medicare. Projections suggest that the ratio of older Americans to working-age individuals will increase sharply in the coming decades, intensifying the fiscal burden and contributing to rising public debt.
The implications extend beyond government spending. Economists warn that shrinking or ageing populations could slow economic growth, reduce innovation and limit the resources available for large-scale investments, including those needed to address climate change. Historically, periods of population growth have been linked to bursts of innovation, and a slowdown in population expansion may weaken this dynamic.
The US is not alone in facing this issue. Fertility rates are declining across much of the world, with a majority of the global population now living in countries where birth rates are below replacement levels. This global trend is contributing to rising public debt and altering economic projections for both developed and developing nations.
Various policy measures have been attempted to reverse declining birth rates, including financial incentives for families and expanded childcare support. However, evidence suggests that such efforts have had limited success. One key factor behind the decline is the increasing opportunity cost of having children, particularly for women balancing education and careers.
