A spokesperson for Germany’s Lufthansa group (LHAG.DE) confirmed on Saturday that flights to and from the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Odessa have been suspended due to growing concerns about a possible Russian invasion of the country.
It will operate some final flights to those cities over the weekend before suspending operations from Monday until the end of this month. The company owns Germany’s flagship carrier as well as Eurowings, Swiss, Brussels, and Austrian Airlines, according to a spokesperson.
According to the spokeswoman, the airline will continue to travel to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, where some countries have relocated their embassies. Lufthansa is closely monitoring the situation and will make a decision on whether or not to operate additional flights at a later date.
With the cancellation of services to and from Ukraine, Lufthansa joins a growing list of European airlines that have previously done so.
Germany’s foreign ministry issued an advisory to its citizens earlier on Saturday, urging them to leave the country.
