Venezuela’s devastating twin earthquakes have claimed more than 4,000 lives, marking one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s history, as authorities and humanitarian agencies shift their focus from rescue operations to the enormous task of long-term recovery and reconstruction.
According to the latest official figures, at least 4,118 people have died while more than 16,700 others have been injured since the powerful back-to-back earthquakes struck on June 24. Thousands of people are still reported missing, raising fears that the final death toll could increase significantly in the coming weeks as search and identification efforts continue.
The disaster was triggered by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake followed shortly by a 7.2-magnitude tremor, causing widespread destruction across several regions. The coastal state of La Guaira emerged as the worst-hit area, where entire residential neighbourhoods, apartment complexes and public infrastructure were reduced to rubble. The scale of destruction has left thousands of families homeless and without access to essential services.

Initial assessments estimate the physical damage at around 37 billion US dollars, making reconstruction one of the country’s biggest financial challenges in recent decades. Emergency medical facilities, temporary shelters and field hospitals have been established in several of the worst-affected areas to provide treatment and humanitarian assistance.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has defended the government’s handling of the disaster despite criticism over the pace of the initial response. She has urged the international community to facilitate the release of Venezuelan assets frozen overseas, including gold reserves held under foreign sanctions, arguing that the funds are urgently needed to finance rebuilding efforts and assist affected communities.
The disaster has also intensified public frustration, with many survivors questioning whether emergency assistance reached devastated communities quickly enough. Residents in several affected areas have reported relying on neighbours, volunteers and international rescue teams during the critical first days after the earthquakes. Relief workers have acknowledged that difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure and the sheer scale of destruction complicated rescue operations.
Experts believe the coming months will be crucial as authorities move from emergency relief to rebuilding homes, restoring public services and supporting displaced families. The reconstruction process is expected to take years, requiring significant investment in housing, healthcare, education and transport infrastructure.
With thousands still unaccounted for and hundreds of communities struggling to recover, Venezuela now faces not only the challenge of rebuilding damaged cities but also helping survivors cope with profound personal losses. Humanitarian agencies have stressed that sustained international support will be essential to restore livelihoods, strengthen public infrastructure and help millions of affected residents rebuild their lives after one of the country’s most destructive natural disasters.
