On Tuesday morning, six individuals were injured when two shophouses partially collapsed in Singapore’s Little India area. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported on Facebook that they received an alert about the incident at around 1:30 am involving two two-storey units located at 84 and 85 Syed Alwi Road in Little India, close to the well-known Mustafa shopping complex.
Upon arrival, SCDF immediately began searching the area to determine if anyone was trapped beneath the rubble. They deployed two search dogs and a drone to assist in the operation. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue one individual from the second floor of the affected shophouse, as the staircase was blocked.
Paramedics assessed two people for minor injuries and transported them to the hospital, while another four individuals who were also assessed for minor injuries chose not to go to the hospital. Due to reports of a loud explosion heard by passersby, a firefighting machine was sent to the scene as a precaution to disperse any potential flammable gases using its water mist spray feature.
No individuals were found trapped under the debris, according to the SCDF. Google Maps indicates that 84 Syed Alwi Road is home to Paakashala Singapore, an Indian vegetarian restaurant, and No. 85 houses Nirja Mega Mart, which sells groceries and vegetables. Reports from media noted significant damage to Paakashala, with visible wires hanging from the ceiling and the outdoor tent distorted.
Emergency responders remained on the scene to ensure that the area was safe and to monitor for any further hazards. The SCDF emphasized the importance of prompt reporting of such incidents to facilitate quick action and minimize risks to public safety. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident raised concerns among nearby businesses and residents, prompting discussions about the structural integrity of older buildings in the area. Many expressed relief that no one was seriously injured, highlighting the importance of safety measures and emergency preparedness in densely populated urban environments.
