The United States Navy has confirmed the loss of one of its most advanced and expensive surveillance drones, an MQ-4C Triton, during operations linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, marking a significant setback in terms of both cost and capability.
According to official data released through a Naval Safety Command report, the high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft crashed on April 9, 2026. The incident has been classified as a “Class A mishap” — a category used by the US military for accidents resulting in damage exceeding $2 million or the complete loss of an aircraft.
The Navy has not disclosed the exact location of the crash, citing operational security concerns. However, multiple reports and flight-tracking data indicate that the drone was operating over the Persian Gulf region when it encountered trouble.
The MQ-4C Triton, manufactured by Northrop Grumman, is among the most sophisticated maritime surveillance drones in the US arsenal. Valued at approximately $240 million, it is designed to fly at altitudes exceeding 50,000 feet and can remain airborne for extended durations while monitoring vast oceanic areas.
Details emerging from open-source flight data suggest that the drone may have experienced a mid-air emergency before going down.
