When the Mexican president visits Washington next month, the United States will make an offer of 300,000 work permits to Mexicans and Central Americans, the Mexican interior minister said on Wednesday.
Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez stated in a speech while on a trip to the border city of Tijuana, where he addressed business leaders, that “every day we’re communicating with the American administration.” Media outlets covered some of his remarks.
According to Lopez, “the American administration promised to initially provide 300,000 temporary work visas, of which 150,000 will be for Mexicans or foreigners who are now in Mexico hoping to go north.”
Requests for response from the U.S. embassy in Mexico were not immediately answered by a spokeswoman.
In July, Vice President Joe Biden and President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador are scheduled to meet in Washington.
