Anthony Albanese, the Centre-Left Labour Party leader, said on Friday that his party would set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the country by 43% by the end of this decade, if the people of the country will vote for his party to form a government next year.
While setting the proposal for the new climate policy, the leader said that if his government is formed, it would mean that Australia will be part of the next international climate summit.
The elections in Australia are due between March and May in 2022.
This policy came after the present Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was recently criticised at the United Nation’s Climate Summit for setting the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 26% to 28% by 2030. Many other countries had set the target of deeper cuts so as to implement the Paris Agreement, which says that countries must maintain temperature rise by 1.5°C.
While talking to the media, Albanese had said that his party thinks that they have got the right balance to make policies that don’t leave behind people and at the same time supports jobs and industries.
As per the Bureau of Meteorology’s State of Climate report, the temperature in Australia is dipping every year with years from 2013 to 2019 being the warmest years in Australia ever.
