Sydney’s Leichhardt Oval will receive $40 million to renovate its deteriorating infrastructure, thanks to a joint effort by federal, state, and local governments to revitalize what locals dub “the eighth wonder of the world.”
On Friday, Anthony Albanese announced $20 million in federal funding. The Inner West council and the New South Wales government will each contribute $10 million to modernize the stadium.
Leichhardt Oval, home to the NRL’s Wests Tigers and a center for local sports, has a 20,000 capacity and has long needed this funding. The upgrades will include new female change rooms to accommodate the rise in women’s football matches, such as those played by Sydney FC’s women’s team. The renovations will also add 3,000 seats and construct a new northern grandstand.
Opened in 1934, the stadium has remained beloved despite efforts to centralize official matches at larger venues like Sydney Football Stadium and Olympic Park.
“There’s nothing better than sitting on Wayne Pearce Hill at Leichhardt Oval,” Albanese remarked, highlighting the charm of the grassy viewing area.
The stadium is set to host 120 sports events in 2024, covering both men’s and women’s matches across different sports.
“My government recognizes the crucial role suburban grounds play in enhancing Australians’ quality of life,” Albanese stated. “This investment benefits not only the Wests Tigers but also supports school, women’s, and girls’ sports. Leichhardt Oval remains a place for loyal fans to support local teams, and this funding ensures that spirit continues.”
At a press conference on Friday, Albanese shared nostalgic memories of the stadium from his youth, recalling how he would catch the 470 bus to watch sports, including the AMCO Cup. He described the passionate yet generous nature of Tigers fans and the tangible energy of the venue.
New South Wales sports minister, Steve Kamper, said the investment would secure the stadium’s future. “This funding will provide top-notch facilities for the next generation of athletes, from elite to grassroots levels,” he said. “Leichhardt Oval is more than just the home of the Wests Tigers; it’s a true community hub and a center for women’s sports.”
On Tuesday night, the Inner West council pledged $10 million for the upgrades. Mayor Darcy Byrne called it a “commitment to saving the eighth wonder of the world,” and emphasized its importance for the future of one of Australia’s most cherished suburban grounds and as a burgeoning hub for women’s sports in Sydney.
