Condom prices across the world are likely to rise sharply in the coming months, with the largest global manufacturer warning of a potential increase of up to 30% due to the ongoing Iran war and its cascading impact on supply chains.
Malaysia-based Karex, which produces more than five billion condoms annually and supplies major global brands as well as public health programmes, has said it may be forced to pass on rising costs to consumers as production becomes increasingly expensive. The company’s chief executive indicated that the situation remains “fragile”, with limited room to absorb the escalating expenses internally.
The price surge is being driven primarily by disruptions in the supply of key raw materials used in condom manufacturing. Many of these inputs—including synthetic rubber, nitrile and lubricants—are derived from petrochemicals, the prices of which have surged due to the conflict in the Middle East. The war has also impacted shipping routes and increased freight costs, further compounding production challenges.
Industry officials say the ongoing tensions, particularly around critical energy corridors such as the Strait of Hormuz, have significantly strained global logistics networks. As a result, shipments are taking longer to reach key markets in Europe and the United States, in some cases nearly doubling transit times. These delays have reduced inventory levels among buyers, prompting concerns about shortages if the disruptions persist.
At the same time, demand for condoms has risen globally, adding further pressure on supply. Experts attribute this increase to economic uncertainty caused by the war, with more people opting to delay parenthood. Additionally, reduced international aid in some regions has contributed to declining stockpiles, particularly in developing countries that rely on subsidised or free distribution.
Karex, which accounts for a significant share of the global condom market, has indicated that it will attempt to scale up production to meet the growing demand. However, executives acknowledge that higher costs for raw materials and transportation leave little choice but to raise prices if the current conditions continue.
The situation underscores the far-reaching economic consequences of the Iran war, which has already driven up global energy prices and affected a wide range of consumer goods. Analysts warn that prolonged disruptions could have broader public health implications, particularly in low-income countries where access to affordable contraception is critical for family planning and disease prevention.
With supply chains under strain and demand on the rise, the coming months are expected to test the resilience of the global contraceptive market, potentially making safe sex more expensive for millions worldwide.
