Tesla (TSLA.O) is recalling around 48,000 Model 3 Performance vehicles in the United States because the speedometer may not appear while in “Track Mode.”
The recall applies to automobiles manufactured between 2018 and 2022. Tesla will fix the problem with an over-the-air software upgrade. Tesla claims that a December software upgrade mistakenly removed the speed unit from the user interface.
The cars do not meet a federal motor vehicle safety requirement, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and if drivers do not know how fast they are going, it could increase the danger of a crash.
Tesla has issued more recalls in the last year, including some in response to NHTSA pressure. Separately, Tesla recalled one 2022 Model X vehicle on Friday because a bracket for the second-row seat was missing.
According to the NHTSA, Tesla has launched a total of ten recall campaigns in 2022, affecting 2.1 million vehicles, but some vehicles are covered by several campaigns. After Ford Motor, this is the second-highest number of vehicles recalled this year.
