The recent decision by the US State Department to pause new student visa interview appointments has thrown the plans of thousands of Indian students into disarray, triggering panic and uncertainty. On May 27, the US government issued a directive halting the scheduling of F‑, M‑, and J‑category visa interviews, citing the need to implement stricter social media vetting measures.
This move, though administrative in nature, has had far-reaching emotional and financial consequences for Indian students, who form the largest group of international students in the US. According to official data, over 331,000 Indian students were studying in the US during the 2023–24 academic year, accounting for nearly 30% of all international enrollments.
The decision came as a shock to students and their families who had already begun preparations for higher studies in the US. From application fees and admission deposits to expensive consulting services and standardized test preparations, families had invested lakhs of rupees into the process. In cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, and Jalandhar, visa appointments, which usually begin in March, suddenly became unavailable mid-cycle.
Many students who had secured admissions to prestigious US universities found themselves without any clear timeline for visa processing. Education consultants noted a sharp rise in panic calls and requests for alternative options as families scrambled to find a plan B.
A key component of the delay is the intensified scrutiny of applicants’ digital footprints. Under the new regulations, students must declare all social media accounts used since 2019, with visa officers instructed to scan for any signs of extremism, hate speech, or anti-Semitic content. This has made even students with confirmed admissions anxious, as posts from years ago could now be used to deny visas. Experts are advising students to audit their online presence and delete potentially controversial content to avoid rejection.
As uncertainty deepens, many families are reconsidering their options. While some are deferring admissions to 2026, others are applying to countries like the UK, Canada, Germany, France, and even the Gulf nations. Germany, with its growing reputation for high-quality STEM education, has seen a particular spike in interest. Meanwhile, education agents are urging students not to panic and to maintain backup options, especially if the delay extends beyond mid-June.
Politically, the move has stirred criticism within India. The opposition Congress party has accused the Modi government of maintaining silence on an issue affecting thousands of Indian youth. They have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to engage diplomatically with Washington to resolve the impasse. Some US universities have also raised concerns over potential enrollment disruptions, with scholarship timelines and campus housing plans thrown into uncertainty.
While visa interviews that had already been scheduled are still being processed, the US government has not provided any timeline for resuming new appointments. There is speculation that interviews might restart in a few weeks, but if the pause continues, many students could miss their fall semester start dates. Some students already studying in the US are also facing challenges, including travel hesitancy due to fears of being denied re-entry.
In the absence of clear communication from US authorities, students and their families are left in limbo, torn between hope and helplessness.
