Roskomnadzor, Russia’s communications regulator, announced on Friday that it has initiated administrative procedures against Google (GOOGL.O) of Alphabet Inc. and six other international technology companies for suspected violations of personal data regulations.
Since Russia pushed tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24, it has fought with Big Tech over content, censorship, data, and local representation in a simmering disagreement that has exploded into a full-fledged information war.
Last year, Russia penalized Google 3 million roubles ($46,540) for failing to store Russian customers’ personal data in databases on Russian soil, and it said on Friday that it had initiated a new action against Google for “continuous failures to comply with Russian legislation.”
According to Roskomnadzor, Google might face a fine of between 6 and 18 million roubles.
The regulator also announced that it has initiated proceedings against Airbnb, Pinterest, Likeme, Twitch, Apple, and United Parcel Service for suspected first-time offenses that may result in fines ranging from 1-6 million roubles.
